Specialist Asbestos Roofing Services in Auckland

We Are Your Local Specialists for Asbestos Roof Removal & Asbestos Roof Replacement

Welcome to asbestosroofing.co.nz, Auckland's dedicated specialists in asbestos roof removal and asbestos roof replacement. Backed by Total Roofing's decades of in-the-field experience and a WorkSafe NZ Class A asbestos licence, we've worked with every type of asbestos roofing found across Auckland.

We worked with corrugated Super Six sheets, flat asbestos cement panels on weatherboard houses, asbestos roof tiles on bungalows, asbestos shingles and asbestos slates, and the often-missed bituminous asbestos underlay hiding beneath a perfectly modern-looking Decramastic or Gerard tile roof.

Any asbestos found on the roof, or under it, we have safely removed it before. From sample testing and WorkSafe NZ notification through to disposal at approved Auckland sites (Redvale, Whitford, Greenmount) and the brand-new COLORSTEEL® roof, we manage every step in-house. One licensed Auckland team, one quote, one tidy site at the end.

Asbestos Roof Removal Auckland

Class A licensed strip-outs of every type of asbestos roofing found across Auckland

Class A licensed removal of bonded and friable asbestos roofing, super six corrugate, asbestos cement panels, asbestos tiles and shingles, slate, and bituminous asbestos underlay from houses, garages, sheds, light industrial buildings and commercial premises across the Auckland region.

Every job is notified to WorkSafe NZ at least five working days before work begins, and your immediate neighbours are notified in writing.

We use wet methods with a PVA-binding solution to lock loose fibres in place before disturbance, no power tools, no breaking, sheet-by-sheet release. All waste is double-wrapped in 200µm polyethylene, labelled, and transported under hazardous-waste manifest to approved Auckland disposal sites: Redvale Landfill (north), Greenmount Transfer Station (east), or Whitford.

Independent air monitoring and a third-party clearance certificate are included on every Class A job, keep these documents with your property records, as buyers' solicitors will ask for them at sale.

Asbestos Roof Replacement Auckland

Full removal plus a new long-run COLORSTEEL® roof, completed in one 5 - 7 day job

Remove the asbestos and re-roof in one continuous job, single scaffold, single quote, single team. We replace old asbestos cement, Super Six and corrugated asbestos with new long-run COLORSTEEL® from NZ Steel: Endura for inland Auckland suburbs, Maxx for North Shore, eastern bays and west coast homes. All standard NZ profiles are supported, corrugate, trapezoidal, tray and 5-rib, across the full COLORSTEEL® colour range.

Every replacement includes new flashings, ridge cappings, gutter integration and roofing underlay. We strongly recommend adding a thermal blanket (Mammoth, Pink Batts or equivalent) at the same time, since old asbestos roofs have zero insulation, the difference in summer ceiling temperatures and winter heat retention is significant.

A standard Auckland villa with 150 m² of roof area is completed inside one week, finished with our 5-year workmanship guarantee and a COLORSTEEL® product warranty of up to 30 years.

Asbestos Roof Encapsulation

An interim sealant option for sound roofs when full replacement isn't yet possible

Encapsulation seals an asbestos roof under a bonded coating system to lock fibres in place. This is a legitimate interim option for commercial sites, rentals and budget-constrained property owners where the roof is structurally sound but full asbestos roof replacement isn't yet on the cards.

We assess friability, sheet integrity, weathering, prior repairs and any active leaks before recommending it. Encapsulation is not appropriate for friable, cracked, hail-damaged, or actively leaking roofs, those require full removal under a Class A licence. Where suitable, we power-wash the surface, apply a primer compatible with asbestos cement, then a flexible elastomeric top coat, sealing all fastener heads and sheet overlaps.

Encapsulation does not discharge your asbestos register or management plan obligations under the Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016, and the asbestos must still be declared at sale.

Why Choose Us

Three commitments
behind every job.

Removing an asbestos roof is not a job for a generalist. The wrong contractor can fibre-contaminate your ceiling cavity, leave you without the documentation a future buyer's solicitor will ask for, or hit you with surprise costs once the sheets come off.

WorkSafe NZSiteSafeNZDAAAsbestosWise
01

Fully licensed & accredited.

WorkSafe NZ Class A asbestos removal licence. SiteSafe membership. NZDAA (New Zealand Demolition and Asbestos Association) member. AsbestosWise verified. Every removalist on site has a current Class A or Class B competency, and our supervisors hold formal asbestos assessor qualifications.

02

The full chain, end to end.

We're the only contractor you deal with, from the initial sample test, through the WorkSafe NZ five-working-day notification, the removal itself, the hazardous-waste manifest, independent air monitoring, your clearance certificate, and finally the new COLORSTEEL® roof. No subcontractor handovers. No finger-pointing if something needs to be put right.

03

5-year workmanship guarantee on every re-roof.

Backed by COLORSTEEL® product warranties of up to 30 years on the new roof itself. If anything we install isn't right, we come back. That's how Total Roofing has built its name across Auckland and the wider region - most of our work comes through neighbour-to-neighbour referrals in suburbs we've worked in for decades.

Frequently Asked Questions About Asphalt Asbestos Roofing

01

How do I know if my roof contains asbestos?

Most Auckland homes built between 1940 and 1990 used asbestos-containing roofing somewhere, corrugated Super Six sheets on garages and sheds (very common in West and South Auckland), asbestos cement tiles on houses, or bituminous asbestos underlays beneath metal or tile roofs. Visual inspection alone is unreliable; the only sure test is a lab sample. We'll do this for you as part of your free Auckland quote.

02

Can I stay in the house during asbestos roof removal?

Yes, in most cases. The work area is sealed and contained, and indoor air remains separated from the work zone. Some Auckland families choose to be out during working hours to avoid the noise, but it's a personal preference, not a safety requirement.

03

Is it legal to remove asbestos roofing myself in Auckland?

Strictly speaking, an unlicensed person can remove up to 10 m² of non-friable asbestos in a non-work setting, but the moment your roof is weathered (and most Auckland roofs are, given our UV and salt spray), it becomes friable, and Class A licensed removal is required. For roofs of any size, we strongly recommend licensed removal. The fine for non-compliance is far steeper than the cost of doing it properly.

04

Will my Auckland house insurance cover asbestos roof replacement?

If your asbestos roof is damaged in a storm, hail or other insurable event, most NZ household policies will cover full replacement (not just patch repair, since asbestos roofs are not safely repairable). Talk to your broker, we provide the inspection report your insurer will need.

05

Do I need to notify Auckland Council?

Asbestos removal notification goes to WorkSafe NZ, not Auckland Council, but Auckland Council does require correct disposal documentation, and the council's approved transfer stations (including Greenmount and Whitford) keep records of every load. We handle all of this for you.

06

How long does the whole job take?

A standard Auckland residential asbestos roof removal and replacement runs on average 5 - 7 working days. A garage only removal is usually a 1 - 2 day job. Steep North Shore cliff-top sites or restricted-access inner-city homes may run a day or two longer.

07

What documentation do I receive?

Your asbestos test results, WorkSafe NZ notification copy, hazardous-waste disposal manifest, independent air-monitoring results (where applicable), and an independent clearance certificate. Keep this bundle with your property records.

08

How much does asbestos roof removal cost in Auckland?

Most Auckland asbestos roof removal jobs land between $70 and $150 per square metre for the removal alone, with full removal-plus-replacement to COLORSTEEL® typically falling between $15,000 and $45,000 for an average residential roof. Cost is driven mostly by access single-storey on a flat West Auckland section vs multi-storey on a steep Titirangi or Devonport site, pitch, total roof area, the friability of the existing material, and how much ceiling-cavity decontamination is required.
